Up In The Monument

Published: Hopwood & Crew c.1870

Music: Alfred Lee

Lyrics: Frank W. Green

Up in the Monument – First sung mid-1870. Concanen’s cover shows Leybourne in a slightly slimmed down and fractionally elongated form to match the proportions of the Monument. It is brim full of witty period detail, with a crowd startled by the sudden appearance of a colossus in the form of George Leybourne. It also provides an accurate illustration of the 202 feet high column, which marked the starting place of the Great Fire of London and its surrounding area in the 1870s.
